Title Hopes Vanish in Schweiger's Dust; Dartmouth Beats Brown 21-16
After a solid first half, the Brown defense could not stop Nick Schweiger, the Ivy League's leading rusher. He ended the day with 137 yards.
Brown's offense never seemed in sync. No identity was ever established and in the fourth quarter, a drive for the go-ahead score ended with an interception in the end zone. Dartmouth ran out the clock from that point.
Harvard, Yale and Cornell all seemed well on their ways to victory.

Paterno Fired
One of the tenants of collegiate football has always been molding outstanding citizens and leaders out of young men. Breaking that tenant is why Joe Paterno is no longer the head coach at Penn State.
At 10 PM last night, the child sex scandal by one of Paterno's own assistant coaches, with such despicable acts taking place on Paterno's watch and turf and the failure to fully act in the best interest of young men already vulnerable due to age and circumstance, took its final toll on what had been considered otherwise a shining example in an era of scandal in NCAA football.
Exonerated from legal responsibility, public opinion and moral expectations overwhelmed even Paterno's record and legacy. Fair or not, the head coach is responsible for all that happens on his watch and those under his command. Due process will now take its place in the matter and surely there will be more revealed about everyones role or lack thereof.
In time, it is possible that all the good that Paterno has done teaching young men over a career spanning six decades and all his good works on the campus of Penn State will be put in perspective, but this lapse of judgement and action has caused irreperable harm to a number of young men and that must be accounted for. For now, that is being accounted for in the forcible ending of his coaching career at Penn State. And if Joe Paterno is the man we all believed him to be, it will only be a down payment on repaying the debt owed.
Finally, the outrage shown by students on Penn State's campus following the firing announcement should be better directed towards the abuse suffered by the young men who have bravely come forward to be heard and seek justice. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.

Paterno Era to End on Negative Note, Announces Retirement at Season's End
The New York Times reports that Joe Paterno's time at the helm of Penn State is coming to a close. Leading the Nitany Lions to a great season, he seemed positioned to go out on his own terms and with a final hurrah as possible Big Ten champs. That now appears not to be, as the sex scandal involving former assistant Jerry Sandusky has overwhelmed a great season and a stellar career of the Division 1 all-time wins leader.
The scandal has already swept out a University VP and the Athletic Director and while the Pennsylvania Attorney General has exonerated Coach Paterno from a legal perspective, that has not quieted the uproar and may entangle the University President as well.

UPDATE: (Coach Paterno statement regarding retirement)
“I am absolutely devastated by the developments in this case. I grieve for the children and their families, and I pray for their comfort and relief.
“I have come to work every day for the last 61 years with one clear goal in mind: To serve the best interests of this university and the young men who have been entrusted to my care. I have the same goal today.
“That’s why I have decided to announce my retirement effective at the end of this season. At this moment the Board of Trustees should not spend a single minute discussing my status. They have far more important matters to address. I want to make this as easy for them as I possibly can.
“This is a tragedy. It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more.
“My goals now are to keep my commitments to my players and staff and finish the season with dignity and determination. And then I will spend the rest of my life doing everything I can to help this University.”

Brown Snubbed from FCS TOP 25
#27 Brown There are 25 FCS teams in the nation with 7 wins or more. There are only six with 1 loss or less. Six teams still occupy the TOP 25 with fewer than 7 wins and 9 teams have at least 3 losses. Brown is 7-1 and still not in the TOP 25, finishing the week at #27. Harvard inched up to #18 with the same record. Respect is apparently hard to come by.
Harvard has not even played Penn and Yale yet, teams Brown has already dispatched. Harvard's quality opponent win was Brown. Bucknell is the only other victory against a team with a winning record at 5-4. Brown has victories against Stony Brook at 6-3, Penn and Yale. It is hard to see how beating Dartmouth and Columbia can push Brown into the TOP 25. Certainly, both Harvard and Brown would be worthy of post-season consideration would the Council of Ivy Presidents have a reversal of policy. An Ivy title would be the best to hope for this season but a TOP 25 finish would be nice too.

Kachmer, Lovett All-Ivy Players of the Week
Mark Kachmer's career high 192 yards rushing (213 all-purpose), 4 total TDs including a Brown record 95-yard TD run earned him a share of the Ivy Offensive Player of the Week honors with Dartmouth's Nick Schweiger, who ran for 257 yards and a TD.
Nate Lovett earned All-Ivy Special Teams player with his 42.3 yard punt average and 3 punts downed inside the 20.
Kyle Rettig also made the Ivy honor roll with 8 tackles (7 solo),with two for a loss.

Brown Survives Late Yale Push 34-28
Brown pushed a healthy 27-7 lead into the middle of the thrid quarter and then survived sloppy play and a final push by Yale to extend their winning streak and keep title hopes alive.
Brown allowed Yale to hang around long enough to have the game come down to an on-side kick with less than 2 minutes left, which Brown recovered and was able to run out the clock. Although statistically Brown nearly topped 200 yards rushing, half of that total came in one play and Mark Kachmer had only 19 carries but 192 yards rushing.
The Brown defense forced multiple turnovers but could not convert into many points. Defense held Yale to 8 yards rushing but the nations #10 passing efficiency defense gave up close to 300 yards and #3 national scoring defense gave up 4 TDs.
Brown will need to hold focus against Dartmouth and Columbia and hope for Yale and or Penn to rebound and knock off Harvard to get a share of the Ivy Crown.

Brown v. Yale
Brown has posted game notes for the 116th meeting between the Bears and the Eli's. Click the title link for the full report.
It is also likely that QB Kyle Newhall-Caballero will inch up the all-time passing list in completions, TDs and possible yardage this weekend. Currently KNC has 32 TD passes, tied for 5th and one behind Joe Giacomo for 4th. He also is 5th in completions and 8 behind Kyle Slager for 4th. He would need 274 yards passing to catch Slager for yardage and move into 5th place. On his current pace this season, he could end his collegiate career in 4th place all-time in yardage, 3rd in all-time completions and 3rd or 4th in all-time TD passes.

Random Musings
Sunday marks the 142nd Anniversary of Rutgers v. Princeton. Happy Birthday Football!
The Sports Network still won't be a Brown believer, picking Yale even though 12 of the past 15 games have been won by the visiting (Brown) team, Brown has won 7 of the last 12 meetings, although they dropped last years meeting at home, 27-24, due mainly to two (2) Chris Smith kickoff returns for TDs.
No snow this weekend!
Brown has inched its way close to the TOP 25 in the FCS polls. However, it has cracked the College Sporting News' Gridiron Power Index (GPI), used to help calculate at-large playoff bids. The Bears currently sit #21GPI, ahead of Samford and one behind 14th ranked Towson.

Week Eight - Yale Bulldogs
Yale is set to host the Bears this Saturday and they are not overlooking anything. In fact they are down right complimentary
"The guys from Providence may very well be the best team the Bulldogs have faced in 2011. Yale is scoring slightly more and moving up the field a little better than Brown, but the Bears’ defense allows the fewest points in the league. On the other side, Brown’s offense averages three yards less (356) than what the Bulldog defense allows. If any of these numbers matter, this could be a sign of a great game to come."
